Joe was born in 1926 in Staten Island New York, then at two years of age the family moved to Brooklyn where he grew up. At 17 years of age, Joe joined the United States Army on Nov. 11th 1944 and was honorably discharged on Nov. 11th 1946 after serving in WWII.

During his tenure in the Army, Joe moved up to the rank of Sgt. and served in WWII in the European and Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations for a total of 18 months. Joe traveled to New Guinea, Italy and finally Japan during WWII and received several commendations. One from President Harry S.
